  LIVER DIALYSIS
Dr Lee Kang Hoe

Asian Centre for Liver Diseases & Transplantation is proud to announce the collaborations that have led to the development of a liver dialysis facility in the Liver ICU at Gleneagles Hospital. MARS liver dialysis has been utilized at our centre for several years. Two newer machines are now undergoing evaluation available exclusively at our centre and provide further options for patients in liver failure. The first new machine is Impact™ which is a non-biological device which incorporates a plasmafiltration device. This is well tolerated and has minimal hemodynamic effects. The second device is ELAD™ (extracorporeal liver assist device) from Vital Therapies. This is a biological device as it contains human hepatocytes that are seeded onto the cartridges. These are flown in directly from San Diego, USA. This device is currently the only available biological device containing human liver cells. The patient is usually treated for a minimum of three days on ELAD and this can be extended for longer periods depending on the patient’s condition. The early trial in China has suggested a survivor advantage and further trials are ongoing in USA. No other centre has access to ELAD on a commercial basis. Our centre is unique in being able to provide all three devices. We believe that having all three devices allows us to tailor the best treatment for our liver failure patients. These devices will reduce total bilirubin levels and ammonia levels. Patients with hepatic encephalopathy usually benefit from liver dialysis as well. It is also important to consider liver transplantation once liver dialysis is started as this may be needed if the liver does not recover despite the liver dialysis.
